In 2017 UNESCO added Pinisi, the art of boatbuilding in South Sulawesi, to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It named three centres of the craft: Tana Beru, Batu Licin, and Bira. So this is not a place near where the schooners are built — it is one of the places they are built. Half an hour up the coast at Tana Beru you can stand beside a hull the size of a house and watch it happen. Closer than that, at Ara, they still build the smaller ones.
There are three within about twenty minutes of here, and two of them have fresh water you can swim in. None is signposted the way a beach is, and none is busy. Besides Goa Leang Passea below, there is Gua Sapo Tanah Lemo behind Pantai Lemo-Lemo — almost nobody knows it is there — and Gua Passohara on the road to Mandala Ria, where technical divers come to dive the cave itself. Ask at reception before you go to any of them — whether it is a good idea that day depends on the water, the weather, and the right shoes.
FAQ
What is there to do in Bira besides the beach?
A boat trip out to Pulau Liukang to snorkel, the phinisi shipyards at Tana Beru, and a coastline of cliffs and quieter beaches to explore by bike. Ask at reception and we will tell you what is worth the trip that week.
Can I visit the boat builders at Tana Beru?
Yes — ask at reception and we will point you the right way and let you know what to expect when you get there.
How do I get around?
A motorbike is easiest — we keep them at the hotel. For a longer day or a few of you, we can arrange a car with a driver. There is no street lighting on these roads, so plan to be back before dark.
